Once viewed as a temporary stage of cyclical growth, shrinking cities are increasingly viewed as a permanent symptom of globalization. A growing number of academics have called for policymakers to shift focus from pursuits of population growth to more varied efforts to enhance the wellbeing of residents in shrinking cities.

This lecture examines three vital questions:

  • What constitutes as a shrinking city?
  • Is there such a thing as a prosperous shrinking city?
  • Under what conditions do shrinking cities succeed?
