Environmental resources are managed by governments, organizations, communities and other stakeholders through a broad range of policy and planning mechanisms. This course provides an introduction to the regulatory structures of environmental policy and the vision-oriented processes of environmental planning.

Through case studies, role-playing activities and analytic writing exercises, we explore ways in which these approaches are used to address key environmental problems such as climate change, habitat loss, hazardous waste and urban sprawl. Students gain familiarity with historic and contemporary environmental problems, understanding of how these problems are addressed through planning and policy means, and ability to analyze and critique ways in which planning and policy tools are used in practice.
