Young Audiences of Western New York, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp., and the School of Architecture and Planning recently initiated the first annual design ideas competition for a Summer Place for Young Audiences at Buffalo’s Outer Harbor.

Thirteen architecture seniors, under the direction of Professor Brian Carter, developed ideas for a "summer place" for youth along Buffalo's harbor as part of the school's "Collaboration + Competition" course this past spring.

In developing their ideas UB students worked with youth in Buffalo’s Young Audiences program and 7th and 8th grade students at Buffalo's Waterfront School. They also met with a representative of the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. Each student prepared two drawings for the course, all of which were reviewed by the competition jury, represented by Cynnie Gaasch (director, Young Audiences of WNY), Despina Stratigakos (associate professor and interim chair of architecture at UB) and Robert Gioia (chairman, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp.)

The community is invited to the Young Audiences 2016 Design Ideas Competition's opening exhibition on Thursday, May 12, at Buffalo's Downtown Library, where winners will be announced and all student drawings will be exhibited (5-7 pm, 1 Lafayette Square, Collections Gallery, 2nd floor). The student work will be on display through June 12.
