Architecture faculty member Miguel Guitart is co-editor of the just-released Architectural Practice II, the second publication in a series exploring how practicing, researching and teaching architects reflect on the early stages of their design. Also published in Spanish by Nobuko as Práctica Arquitectónica, the book includes essays by Josemaría de Churtichaga, Eduardo Delgado Orusco, Arturo Franco, Karamuk Kuo, Luis Martínez Santa-María, Sol89, and Tabuenca & Leache.

By compiling the architects’ unique approaches to design, the Architectural Practice series aims to become a reference in academia and professional circles at large. This is the second issue of the series co-edited by Guitart and Daniel Gimeno, who also practice together as Gimeno Guitart in Madrid.

Architectural Practice II.

In the prologue, editors Guitart and Gimeno, look back to the beginning of the Architectural Practice “adventure” and how it has since evolved into a diverse collection of reflections on architecture.

“Sometimes we might wonder whether this or that essay, whether this or that introduction, are not drifting away from the specific heading of the AP series. The answer would be ‘no.’ All of them have their place in the thread of experiences, visions, and generous contributions to this common reflection that continues to increase its critical mass. Thus, the series will expand with upcoming issues, simmering slowly, little by little, carefully working on every detail. We will search for even more talent, uniting it under a single purpose: the loving commitment to a life built around architecture.”

Guitart also recently received an Individual Project Award from the New York State Council of the Arts (NYSCA) in support of a separate forthcoming publication, Mapping Emotional Perceptions: From Josef Albers to Mathias Goeritz. Laboratory of Paper.

Miguel Guitart, PhD, is an architect and academic currently teaching as a visiting associate professor of architecture at UB. His research focuses on the phenomenological construction of the space through the exploration of light, vision and matter, with a special focus on filters. His current research has expanded into the relationships between the anonymous vernacular architecture and its contemporary counterpart, as well as issues of composition, basic design and perception in architecture.
