Interdisciplinary Options

There are two options for students who wish to fulfill the Generalist Track: The traditional core curriculum which includes additional studio training, and a variant on the traditional core that adds more “methods” courses.

Talk with your faculty advisor about these options, compared to a specialization track.

Generalist Track - Option #1 (Practice)

Complete 2 courses (6 credits) and one studio (6 credits) beyond the MUP degree requirements (core courses, studio, colloquium, and culminating exercise)

  1. URP 581 urban planning laboratory-practicum (or “studio”) (6 credits)
    (note: one 6-credit studio already required in core curriculum)
  2. Choose two introductory courses from the other five specializations: (6 credits)
  • URP 505 Urban Planning and Environmental Change
  • URP 522 Economic Development and Industrial Change
  • URP 535 Urban Management and Governance
  • URP 565 Urban Planning and Design I
  • URP 568 Environmental Planning and Policy
  • URP 569 GIS Applications
  • URP 576 Comparative International Development
  • URP 606 Community Development Processes

Generalist Track - Option #2 (Methods)

Complete 4 courses (12 credits) beyond the MUP degree requirements (core courses, studio, colloquium, and culminating exercise)

  1. URP 513 Quantitative Methods for Planning (3 credits)
  2. One additional methods course chosen from: (3 credits)
  • URP 561 Qualitative Methods for Planning
  • URP 566 Urban Planning and Design II
  • URP 571 3-D Visual and Urban Simulation
  • URP 578 Environmental Planning Methods
  • URP 601 Advanced GIS Applications
  • URP 602 Environmental Planning Support Systems

3        Choose two introductory courses from the other five specializations:
