Jin Young Song of the School of Architecture has been selected as an Architecture A+ Awards 2017 finalist in the Hospitality-Unbuilt Hospitality category for his design, “Hotel Solitaire”. The Architecture A+ Awards recognize and promote the year’s best architecture and products. Each year, a panel of highly reputable jurors select five finalists for each category prior to opening the results up to an online global vote. Winning project designers will be invited to join jurors and VIPs in celebration of this year’s accomplishments in the field of architecture at the NYCxEvent, a red carpet gala, in New York City.

Song’s innovative design considers hospitality needs in relation to dynamic market forces and globalization in rapidly expanding megacities by suspending hammock-like hotel from a large scale bridge crossing a major waterway in South, South Korea. Hotel Solitaire challenges the longstanding tradition of architecture as permanent by existing as temporary, and creating the freedom to move to other locations, defying the sentiment of isolation. Hotel Solitaire can happen anywhere.

The prefabricated module where the guests stay, is based on lightweight steel framing and cable and requires minimal infrastructure hook up. The hotel lobby is located on the nearby pier where guests can check in and out before and after their stay. They are then transported by a special ferry with a lift to enter their rooms. The ferry is the only way to enter and exit the room, giving their guest an optimal experience of isolation and freedom from the bustling vitality of the city. A parametric wrapper lines the skin of the room allowing the structure to respond to the user’s needs by opening and closing L-shaped thin aluminum panels to allow light to enter or be blocked.

Voting for the 5th Annual A+ Awards Popular Choice finalist winners is open until Thursday, March 30, 2017. VOTE NOW!
