Miguel Guitart, Ph.D. is an architect and academic from Madrid, Spain. He teaches as Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.

Guitart obtained his Ph.D in Architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM), Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) in 2014, where he graduated in architecture and became Licensed Architect in Spain in 2000. Guitart obtained his Master’s Degree at the Graduate School of Design GSD at Harvard University in 2003 as a J. W. Fulbright Scholar.

Guitart has taught at the Pontifical University of Madrid UPSAM (Associate Professor 2006-2014), EINA University of Zaragoza UNIZAR (Associate Professor 2013-2014), the Boston Architectural Center BAC (Visiting Professor, 2002-2003), Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid ETSAM (Visiting Lecturer, 2013, 2012, 2010), Harvard University GSD (Visiting Critic, 2002), ESNE-UCJC (Visiting Lecturer, 2011, 2012), and the School of Design and Construction at Washington State University (Visiting Lecturer, 2014).

A Principal at Gimeno Guitart (www.gimeno-guitart.com), Guitart has received international recognition (ACSA Faculty Design Honorable Mention, NY State Council for the Arts, or AZ Awards in Canada, among others). Guitart previously worked at the office of De Stefano+Partners in Chicago and Equator European Architects in Madrid, contributing to projects both in Europe and the US.   

His Ph.D. research focuses on the phenomenological construction of the space through the exploration of light, vision and matter, with a special focus on filters. His current research has expanded into the experiential relationships between matter and perception in architecture. Guitart has published internationally numerous articles on architectural theory in magazines such as the Journal of Architectural Education JAE, Arquia Próxima, Cátedra Cerámica, TC Cuadernos, ZARCH, Future Arquitecturas, Rita, and Arquitectura COAM, among others. He has also edited and authored several books, like The Depth of the Skin or the Práctica Arquitectónica PA book series on methods on the practice of architectural design.
